# STAY CORE.

*Friday, 9 October 2026*

This week is TAG DER CLUBKULTUR, Berlin's festival of club culture.[^1] More than 110 clubs and collectives, around 130 nights.

The festival asks one question: *what is the core?*

You'll hear that Berlin's clubs are dying, but the numbers suggests something else. Since 2020, 24 clubs closed and about 25 new ones opened.[^2] The scene isn't disappearing, it's turning over. The next generation of nights is being built right now, and what it becomes depends on the people in it.

Our answer fits on three cards, hidden somewhere tonight:

**Care. Dare. Give.**

# Care.

*Friday, 9 October 2026*

A night like this is built long before the doors open. Over coffees, calls and a hundred emails between promoters, clubs, artists and crew.

Everyone is feeling the squeeze, each from a different side. 39% of Berlin clubs made a loss last year. The door now carries most of a night's income. A Charité study found club work is draining, with little support behind it.[^1] Clubcommission is now calling for better working conditions and fair minimum pay for artists.

When things get tight, it's easy to see each other as costs and invoices. Care is remembering there's a person on the other side. Sit down for a coffee. Listen before you ask. Say thank you like you mean it.

**Scenes are built on people, not transactions.**

Read the study.[^2]

# Dare.

The safe choice is always right there. The DJ you already know. The club you always go to. The way it's always been done.

85% of Berlin clubs say money pressure is changing what they book.[^1] When margins are thin, everyone plays it safe, the same names go round, and new ones never get a first room. Scenes don't renew that way.

But daring isn't only about who plays. How tickets are priced, how a door is run, which tools a night runs on, who gets a say: most of it is habit. Keep what's core, question the rest.

Ask why things are done the way they are. Try that approach nobody uses yet. Give somebody talented a first opportunity. This week, over 110 clubs and collectives are open.[^2] **Go somewhere you've never been.**

Dare

# Give.

*Friday, 9 October 2026*

Be a giver, not a taker.

Public money is just 2% of what keeps a Berlin club running.[^1] Almost everything else comes from the people inside it. A scene is what its people put in.

More and more, that's how clubs survive too: 55% now work with other clubs, 45% with initiatives and NGOs.[^1] Sharing stages, crowds and know-how.

Giving means opening doors for others. Pass on the gig you can't take. Share the contact. Teach what took you years to learn. Not to cash a favour in later. Just because it's the right thing to do.

And it starts small. **Introduce two people who should know each other. Tell the opener their set mattered. Thank the people working tonight.**
